His career with the Cougars started strong, making the Conference USA All-Freshman squad in 2007 by starting three games, intercepting a pass and breaking up three others. The following year, he only started four games but still intercepted four throws and broke up four more. Means' production dropped his junior year, making just 11 tackles in eight games. And though he started only two contests as a senior, Means intercepted three passes and broke up six others while playing a lot of snaps in 2010.
Means' lack of starts may worry some scouts, but his short-area quickness, production when on the field and excellent play during the Eastham Energy practices and game could push a team to take a chance on his skills in the slot late in the draft.
Positives: Owns very light, quick feet to stay with receivers in short areas from the slot or outside. Mirrors slot receivers well, stays tight on option and comeback routes. Secures tackles despite his thin build. Capable of playing on the line and in off coverage. Very good straight-line speed to stay with receivers and chase down ballcarriers from behind. Sticks with double moves and has speed to recover if hesitating. Very good hands for the interception. Reads the quarterback's eyes and has closing speed to make the pick. High-points passes when coming from underneath in zone, has body control, balance and speed to be a threat on the return.
Negatives: Thin upper-body and leg builds. Wiry strength may not be enough to bring down mature veterans at the next level, will need to prove he can cut tackle effectively. Stands tall in stance and backpedal, needs to get lower to plant-and-drive more quickly and change directions with NFL receivers."
Strengths: A ton of upside, still very raw and coachable talent. Good speed, fluid in his backpedal transition. Shown a penchant for getting the turnovers. Might be a sleeper in the later rounds.
Weaknesses: Inexperienced. Only started 1 full season. Has marginal productivity in limited action. Could be overlooked due to the fact that he played in a smaller football conference.
Projection: Currently picking him to go somewhere between rounds 6-7, conditional on a good pro day workout. If he times poorly, he could fall off the board completely."
