Isn’t a guy who can consistently drive opposing linemen off the football, but understands angles, works hard inside and can seal to create seams. Possesses only average range on the move to the second level. Has the ability to pull and reach his target, but lacks ideal body control through the play. Will get a piece of his man, but isn’t a guy who can break down and seal consistently at the second level.
Lacks ideal initial burst off the football in the pass game and struggles to consistently reach explosive defenders off his frame who are looking to shoot gaps and get up the field. However, has the ability to sit into his stance and anchor on contact vs. the bull rush. Is a flexible, balanced pass blocker who can shuffle his feet with ease and is tough to disengage from once he gets his hands on you.
Isn’t real long armed, but has a quick, compact punch off the ball. Doesn’t really jar on contact, but showcases good hand usage, can routinely gain inside leverage and reworks his hands through the play in order to maintain the advantage. Works very well in tandem with his guards and has the awareness to pass off defenders and keep the inside of the pocket clean.
Impression: Isn’t the most athletic of guys, but works hard, knows how to work his hands and plays with good leverage in both the run and pass game. He understands angles in the run game, can anchor and slide vs. the pass and could end up fighting for playing time with some experience in the league, but looks better suited as a reserve."
Positive: Explosive position blocker who plays with solid fundamentals. Bends his knees, gets leverage on opponents, and keeps his feet moving throughout the action. Fires off the snap, quickly gets his hands into defenders, and stays square. Gets positioning on opponents and seals them from the action. Displays good awareness and vision and effectively quarterbacks the offensive line. Solid with the shotgun snaps.
Negative: Really does not get much movement at the point of attack as a run blocker. Lacks a dominant base.
Analysis: Taylor is a big center who comes with limited athleticism and marginal upside. He possesses the underlying skills to make a roster at the next level if he improves his run blocking."
Negatives: Arms are a little shorter than ideal... Can be beat by quicker defensive tackles... Can be slow getting in front of stunts and delayed blitzes... Leans into his blocks... Lunges to make contact with quicker defenders."
Weaknesses: Top-heavy player, as he doesn't have the lower body strength to drive defenders off the LOS consistently. Succeptible to push-pull moves and only has average lateral quickness in pass pro.
Projection: Sixth or seventh rounder. Due to his great strength, teams in the late rounds will look to get him and develop him into a potential starter."
Taylor is a three year starter at center and has played some guard as well. In 2008 he was an honorable mention All-MWC honoree and he followed that up with second-team accolades in 2009. Despite missing a game with a knee injury early in the year, Taylor should be the frontrunner for first-team honors during his senior campaign.
Taylor lacks the physical attributes to be a top center in this class. If anything, his workouts will likely drop his stock a little more. However, Taylor is the type of player who can impress scouts in game situations and he will have plenty of opportunities to boost his stock during senior week."
Zane Taylor is an interesting Prospect: He has an absolutely tremendous Crouch, giving him the Leverage Edge much more often than not. And he's a very intelligent Tactician who boasts exceptional Mechanics. He displays good Power in the Run Game, as well, and decent Strength against the Pass Rush, as well as reasonable Lateral Agility. His one real weakness is Flanking Speed on Pulls + Traps.
All told, there's something to work with, here.
