CornerBack ~ Artie Burns ~ Miami Hurricanes
For that reason, and in order to offer NomenClature that speaks not to archaic, obsolete "Positions", but rather to Skill Sets that accurately reflect the dynamic Changes of the 21st Century Game and the Roles they have spawned, I have undertaken to craft Terminology that is designed to break Skill Sets down as they really are.
Defensive Coordinators have, since Time Immemorial, employed highly creative terminology in devising Defenses and in designating Assignments. In that Spirit, I have admittedly indulged myself considerably in devising the following NomenClature. It is undeniably colorful, but I like to think that there's an underlying Logic, as well:
CornerBacks ~ I find it quite amusing that the very last Skill Set on my list is the only Defensive Skill Set ~ so far!! ~ for whom I haven't adapted or invented a new Term. The Prototype would be about 6000/195.
CornerBacks are of course Pass Defense Specialists, but I will include Run Defense in my Evaluations. But I will note, of course, that as with Blocking as it pertains to WideOuts, it is desirable, yes, but its absence is no Red Flag.
Agility: Acceleration, Ricochet, Fluidity, and Verticity ~ that's Turn & Burn Acuity, to you Earthlings!!
Processing Speed: How quickly and effectively one Reads & Reacts to the developing Play.
Run Defense: Power, Agility, Combat Skills, Navigating Traffic, Processing Speed, Motor, and Tackling.
Pass Coverage: Combat Skills, Agility, Processing Speed, and Catch Point Capacity.
Broken down into SubCategories, it'd go something like this:
* Fluidity, above all things: Core Agility & Flexibility makes everything possible.
* Ricochet ~ How crisply and how rapidly one breaks in a new direction.
* Acceleration ~ Short Speed or Quickness. Closing Speed.
* Verticity ~ The Ability ~ or lack thereof ~ to Flips Hips and Turn & Burn in Pass Coverage.
* How quickly and effectively one Reads & Reacts to the developing Play.
* Combat Skills
* Navigating Traffic
* Processing Speed
* Combat Skills
* Processing Speed
* Catch Point Capacity
Processing Speed: Mediocre. His Attention has been split by Track & Field at Miami, and it shows. It's improving, though.
Run Defense: Competitive, but with tremendous Potential. Marginal Mechanics and mediocre Core Power, translating to marginal Combat Skills, but an impressive Appetite for Combat and a phenomenal WingSpan.
Pass Coverage: Mediocre at this point, because his Mechanics are raw as Hell, but his improving Field Vision, his Motor, and his Speed, Fluidity, and extraordinary WingSpan translate to dominant Potential.
Players with his combination of Fluidity and Speed with a sensational WingSpan are very rare.
As I measure it, we're talking Top 10 Talent ~ Top 5.
So it comes down to assessing the Chances of his fulfilling his extraordinary Potential ~ of analyzing his Intelligence and Drive, as I see it. And while I've read multiple Reports going the other way on this by Writers I respect, my impression is that of a highly motivated kid who's had to deal with a lot of dramatic Adversity in his personal Life, and whose Focus probably wavered from time to time...but whose Body of Work, taken as a whole, reveals a Player whose Intensity is generally at a high level, whose Field Vision and Processing Speed have been slowed down by his dividing his Time and Attention between FootBall and Track ~ where he's a Record Breaker!! ~ but which improved in 2015...and what I find startlingly revealing: His decision to take Custody of his two younger Brothers in addition to his own Son.
The perfectly understandable decision to pursue his extraordinary Track Talent cost him in the mental developmental side of FootBall, but he's getting there, anyway, and presuming that that's no longer going to be a distraction, I'm not at all worried about'm in that regard: He improved, last Year, and I expect his Improvement to accelerate now that he's ~ presumably!! ~ going to be 100% focused on FootBall...It's just a matter of his Work Ethic on Film.
And as far as that's concerned ~ Work Ethic ~ I'm extremely confident about this kid. Guys don't take on the Responsibility of raising 3 kids because they're lazy. And neither do guys take on 2 Sports because they're lazy. It takes Years of sustained Intensity and TruckLoads of Hard Work to excel at two Sports, and with all his Time & Energy now effectively Doubled Down on FootBall, yes, I expect his Combat Skills and his Field Vision to improve rapidly.
Yeah, I presume nothing of the Future, and I'll be the first to admit that this Scouting Report, like all my Scouting Reports, is oozing Speculation and Extrapolation. He may very well have Character Flaws that I haven't discerned, and what others perceived as an inconsistent Motor may prove to be a more accurate evaluation than mine is.
And indeed, I'll be attenuating my Grade & Rank on'm due to that lack of certainty, because he's got himself a ton of Work to do to fulfill his amazing Talent ~ more than most usually do ~ and it'd be foolish to imagine that I'm absolutely sure.
Grateful Thanks, as always, for the crucial Work done by the folks at Draft BreakDown!!
This is not is even remotely a Complaint, mind you, but rather a Warning: Caveat Emptor!!
