The most compelling Attributes of a Free Safety are, in my view, and in no particular order:
Processing Speed ~ The ability to Rapidly Read & React to the Play as it develops
Diagnostic Acuity ~ The ability to do so effectively and with Precision
Range ~ Lateral Velocity & DownHill Burst
Verticity ~ Turn & Burn Acuity ~ Flip of the Hip to Rotate & Run with Receivers
Combat ~ The ability to work through Traffic
Tackling ~ Consistency & Precision
Run Defense ~ Awful. Thomas displays superior Range in getting UpField, but his Fluidity is absolutely horrific, and he's a bad Tackler. He looks lost & confused once he gets within Striking Range, with often disastrous results. In'is Defense, he plays with a lot of Fire & Passion, and makes Big Plays...It's just that he also gives up far too many.
I like Phillip Thomas: He's a smart and Savvy kid, and he plays with Passion & Intelligence...
But the fact remains ~ at least in my eyes ~ that while he'll probably continue to make the occasional Splash Play in Coverage ~ read: Interception ~ and might even cadge an All Pro selection or two because of it, if he gets enough playing time to do so...that he's unremarkable in actual Coverage and a phucking nightmare in Run Defense.
